In today’s post, we’ll be discovering how a sudden realisation down a supermarket beauty aisle led four friends from Manchester to spot a huge gap in the market and take on a billion-dollar industry to create sustainable beauty products for everyone. 

Noticing The Great Divide

One day, four friends, Simon, Beth, Andy, and George, were wandering down a supermarket beauty aisle when they realised that there was one wall of pink to the left full of women’s beauty products, and a small pocket of grey to the right with a small selection of men’s grooming products. It got them to thinking – why are women’s beauty choices so vast (and complicated), and why are men’s so limited? Why are skincare products and razors so expensive? And lastly, why were there such outrageous claims everywhere?

It made them question if people really are that different, and if higher quality equals a higher price. And their findings led them to exploring different ways of how they could bring beauty products to the masses, without the complications or the huge price tag.

For years, the friends spend their time designing and perfecting what we now know as the grüum range. A line of products that serves a real purpose, uses quality ingredients, cuts out the gimmicks, keeps costs and prices low, and loses the labels. The friends also vowed not to make products for ‘him’ or for ‘her’, but for everybody, adopting a motto of ‘Simple. Honest. Fair’.  

grüum’s Commitment To The Planet

As a self-proclaimed start-up of ‘average Joes’, grüum are naturally very concerned about the impact that product packaging waste is having on our world. To do their bit for the environment, the brand launched a razor cartridge recycling scheme - which was the UK’s first. Additionally, they use minimal, recyclable packaging for their products. 

Packaging
Made from cardboard, grüum’s postal packaging is fully recyclable. Some orders also contain biodegradable packing peanuts to help to protect your orders whilst being compostable and dissolvable in water.

Plastic bottles
Made from HDPE or LDPE, grüum’s plastic bottles are commonly recyclable plastics. What’s more, their caps and spray tops are made from PP – another recyclable plastic.

Glass bottles
Glass bottles are the home of choice for grüum’s face oils which means you can easily recycle them after use. Simply rinse and pop into your glass recycling bin.

Metal tins
grüum’s beard waxes come in a recyclable aluminium tin -once you’ve finished your product, simply pull out the cap liner and add the tin to your metal recycling bin.
