How to Clean Your Makeup Brushes

We're all aware that we need to keep our make up brushes clean. Over time they develop a build up of product and bacteria, so sweeping them across your face on a daily basis is obviously going to spread these germs over the skin. For me, I delay my brush wash because I can't be bothered, while many avoid it as they simply don't know how they should be doing it. Well, it's actually not as hard or as time consuming as you might expect. Here's why

You don't need to wash them after every use

Obviously the pros need to deeply cleanse their brushes after every use, but the rest of us can normally get away with once a month. That's right, you just need to set aside ten minutes a month for a brush cleanse. In fact, over washing of your brushes can cause them to lose their shape and loosen the glue that holds the bristles in place.

You don't need a specific brush cleanser

They're great if you're a make up artist or have some pricey brushes you want to take extra special care of, but you can just use a product that's already in your bathroom cabinet. A gentle, water-soluble face cleanser or a shampoo will do the job nicely, just remember to thoroughly rinse away.

So, how do you actually clean your brushes?

Hold the brush hairs down and wet with warm water. Avoid getting the handle wet and always ensure the brush is held with the bristles down to avoid water going up the ferrule and loosening the glue. Add a small amount of your chosen cleanser to the palm of your hand and gently swirl the dampened brush in the product. Thoroughly rinse, again using lukewarm water. Squeeze out any excess water and reshape the bristles. Lay flat on a towel and allow to air dry. Don't try to speed up drying time by placing on a radiator or blasting with the hairdryer as this can damage the bristles.If it's been a while since your last brush wash, I'd recommend opting for a specific brush cleanser to ensure all the dirt and bacteria is removed, before moving onto a simpler method for maintenance.
