About Iron Supplements

What Is Iron?

Iron is an essential mineral that plays a vital role in transporting oxygen throughout the body. It is a key component of haemoglobin, the protein found in red blood cells that carries oxygen from your lungs to your tissues and organs. While it may sound abstract, this directly relates to your energy levels and even your cognitive function.

Because your body cannot produce iron on its own, it must be obtained through your diet or supplementation. The amount of iron in your body can be affected by several external factors, making adding iron supplements to your daily wellness routine a popular choice for many.

What We Say...

“Iron supplements can be incredibly helpful when your levels need support, but consistency and timing really matter. Try taking your iron at the same time each day, ideally away from tea, coffee and calcium-rich foods, as these can affect absorption. Pairing iron with vitamin C, such as a glass of orange juice or a vitamin C supplement, can help your body absorb it more effectively. Be patient, as it can take several weeks to feel the benefits, especially if you’re taking iron to support tiredness or low energy.”

What NOA Thinks About Iron

Megan Hallett, Head of Nutrition at NOA, says:
"Iron is rarely as simple as one number. Our blood test looks at four markers in this picture: iron, ferritin (your stores), TIBC and transferrin saturation (how well iron is being transported), because tiredness, hair thinning or poor concentration can come from several different places: low stores, poor absorption or something else entirely. That's why we always recommend testing before you start supplementing. Taking iron you don't need can mask other issues, and unnecessary iron can build up in the body over time, which is part of why we recommend knowing your levels before you start. A blood test shows you what's actually going on with your iron status, and roughly how much you need, so your routine is built on your own results rather than guesswork."

The Benefits Of Daily Iron Supplementation

Iron supplements are a popular choice for many people, whether you have a low iron count and feel you may be at risk of anaemia, or you simply want to take iron supplements as a preventative measure to keep you feeling energised.

Supports Energy Levels: One of the most well-known benefits of iron is its role in energy production. Iron helps transport oxygen around the body, supporting your metabolism and helping to reduce tiredness, feelings of brain fog and fatigue.

Supports Cognitive Function: Iron contributes to normal cognitive function, helping to support concentration, focus and mental performance, so if you've found yourself struggling to concentrate, it may be down to a lack of iron.

Helps Form Healthy Red Blood Cells: Iron contributes to the normal formation of red blood cells and haemoglobin, which are responsible for delivering oxygen throughout the body, ensuring you have the required energy needed for daily functions, cellular repair, as well as a feeling of general health and wellbeing.

Supports the Immune System: Iron contributes to the normal function of the immune system, helping your body maintain its natural defences, helping you to fight off illness and infection.

Supports Active Lifestyles: Whether you're balancing a busy schedule, maintaining an active lifestyle or looking to support your nutritional intake, iron supplements can help you meet your daily requirements. If you have an active lifestyle explore the benefits of creatine and vitamin B12 for an added boost.

About Iron Supplementation

Choosing Your Perfect Iron Supplement

If you're not sure where to start, get in touch with our team of wellness experts.

Getting The Most From Your Iron Routine

To get the most out of taking your iron supplement, aim to take it first thing in the morning on an empty stomach, as this helps with absorption. Taking it roughly twenty minutes before you consume any food is a good rule of thumb. As with all supplements, consistency is key. Taking your supplement regularly will help you see and feel the benefits more rapidly.

It's also a good idea to avoid drinks that include tannins, such as tea and coffee or certain wines, around the time you take your iron supplement, as tannins can block iron from being absorbed, which will reduce the effectiveness of your iron supplement. To improve the efficiency try taking your supplement with a class of vitamin C.

Iron For Everyday Wellness

Iron plays a fundamental role in energy production, oxygen transport and cognitive function. Alongside a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle, iron supplements can help support your nutritional intake and overall well-being. Choosing a high-quality iron supplement that aligns with your needs can help you feel your best and banish brain fog.

What Is Iron Bisglycinate?

Iron bisglycinate is a chelated form of iron designed to enhance absorption while being gentle on the digestive system. As a result, iron bisglycinate has become a popular choice for those looking for a high-quality, yet gentle iron supplement.
